Back in June we received a poem that was written by one of our dinner guests while dining at the Inn. It was so nice that we thought we would share it with everyone.

Kendall Merriam, Rockland’s Poet Laureate at Hartstone Inn 6/6/11 8:45 pm, listening to Diana Krall.

The Revolution (for the Chef, Manager, Waitress on Almond Branch’s Birthday)

The best meal of a lifetime
on a sacred day
we were tempted to lick
the platters clean
but being urbane Rocklander’s
we resisted through politeness
We agreed on her natal day
that the meal was lovely, lovely
with the taste of old Europe
and the Caribbean
a combination we’ll remember
Life can be a journey
of goodness, flavored elegantly
to honor Phyllis’s
dedication to the lives of children
a celebration of life
that has meant so much to me
and hundreds of others
So thank you all
for your creation of taste!

Thank you Kendall!

We love to let our guests here at The Hartstone Inn know what is new in the Camden, Maine dinning scene. Several new restaurants have opened in Camden in the last few months. 40 Paper Italian Bistro and Bar, located in downtown Camden in the historic mill building is one. The information posted below is from their website which also has a neat virtual tour feature so you can get a feel of the interior.

“40 Paper is both an intimate neighborhood bistro & a hip urban bar. Here you can have dinner in one of two dining rooms and enjoy modern Italian cuisine while choosing from our eclectic wine list. We have a large, constantly changing dinner menu that reflects both traditional Italian cuisine and borrows from Italy’s Mediterranean neighbors, too.

At 40 Paper you can have a seat in a leather backed stool at our large, butcher-block bar. Dinner is always available at the bar, but many choose to snack on antipasti, share a flatbread pizza or just have a drink. We have numerous wines by the glass, 6 artisan beers on tap, and an elaborate cocktail menu. Large and constantly evolving, it reflects both our sources for obscure liquors and our passion for interesting ingredients. And don’t worry if the bar’s full, there is an intimate lounge with leather sofas to relax in which, is really why you came here, right.”

View the Trip Advisor reviews of the restaurant here. There are only a few as it has not been open for more than a month or two. We are looking forward to hearing feedback from our guests on this and all the new restaurants in town!

I just picked up the current issue of Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors magazine, not noticing the caption on the cover that reads “Dining at the Hartstone,” and began paging through the articles. For some strange reason, I always flip through magazines from the back to the front, scan over articles and save the heavy reading for my day off, usually on my boat. No magazine could be more fitting to read while floating in Camden harbor. After two page flips, I see a dining photo that looks very familiar. “MJ” (Mary Jo) I yell, “we’re in this issue of Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors.” I made an exception and read the article on land. Peter H. Spectre writes a restaurant review for each issue under the heading “Mainely Gourmet.” The magazine features great articles on boating, Maine homes and, of course, dining. Here is the link to the article: http://www.maineboats.com/print/issue-111/mainely-gourmet-111

I’d like to thank Peter and the staff at Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors for the review and encourage anyone with an interest in Maine maritime to subscribe to this wonderful magazine.
