Feb 6 (all day) -- U.S. Toboggan Championships

Event date/time: February 6–8, 2015

This amateur event started in the 1990s and has swelled into a serious affair, with people coming from all over the U.S and overseas, often with their wooden toboggans roped to the roof of their family SUVs. Feb 6 (all day) -- Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour

Just in time for Valentine’s Day! Chef Michael of the Hartstone Inn will walk you through a full gourmet meal that you can prepare at home for that special someone. These recipes are created especially for a special occasion celebrated by two. The menu starts with a special Valentine red-raspberry mojito followed by a Stilton cheese and shrimp tartlet with toasted pine nuts and bosc pears and then a soup of portabella mushroom with a sherry cream. Do you enjoy sushi and would like to learn how to make it at home?  “Sushi 101″ will teach you all the basics including how to prepare rice and other ingredients needed to roll sushi.  Learn the proper methods for small to large rolls along with the correct knife techniques.  Whether you are a beginner or accomplished, you will learn centuries old ways for making Edo-style sushi with a modern twist.  It’s sure to impress your family and friends!  Instructor Chris Wolf has been a sushi chef for 25 years. He has owned his own Japanese restaurants and mentored under three sushi masters in his career. Recipes include their popular banana coconut bread, ricotta pudding with a strawberry-rhubarb compote, baked apple, raisin and cinnamon pancakes, shirred eggs with Cherry tomatoes and a pesto sour cream, and chicken sausage patties. Apr 11 at 1:00 pm -- “Pasta, Pasta, Pasta” Cooking Class

Join Chef Michael Salmon of the Hartstone Inn and learn how to make pasta!  Techniques include making the dough, coloring and flavoring different pastas, rolling out and cutting various shapes of pasta, filling pastas such as raviolis and tortellini and cooking pasta. Apr 25 at 1:00 pm -- Candies & Confections Cooking Class

May 2 at 1:00 pm -- Artisan Chocolate Making Class

 Kate Shaffer of Black Dinah Chocolatiers at the Hartstone Inn as she guides you through the magic world of professional chocolate making.  Kate’s beautiful and delicious, handmade chocolate treats have been featured in both Gourmet and Martha Stewart Living magazines.  The two hour will class include:

  • A brief overview of how chocolate is made, from bean to bar
  • Tasting chocolate and figuring out what you like
  • What does it take to be a truffle?  Making ganache
  • Working with chocolate: Melting and tempering, enrobing, moulding, decorating
  • Storing chocolate
  • Sampling and enjoying chocolate

May 9 at 1:00 pm -- Gourmet Cupcake Cooking Class

Join Alysia Zoidis of East End Cupcakes (Portland, Maine) at the Hartstone Inn as she teaches participants how to make gourmet cupcakes and frosting from scratch.  Alysia was runner up on the hit Food Network TV show, “Cupcake Wars” in 2012.   The class will  begin with the basics, a vanilla cupcake with vanilla butter cream frosting.  Then it’s off to more unique flavors, a bacon cupcake with maple frosting followed by a lavender cupcake with chocolate ganache.  (Um…yum!)  There will be plenty of sampling and did we mention, wine?  It is sure to be a sugar and flour filled, tasty, fun afternoon!   $45 per person.  Planning to stay overnight?  Book our Cooking Class Getaway Package.

Did you know that the whoopie pie is Maine’s official state treat?  Nancy Griffin, author of the book “Making Whoopies” will lead a fun class at the Hartstone Inn on this iconic New England dessert.  Four flavor combinations will be made and then enjoyed – classic, red velvet, banana with cream cheese frosting and chocolate with peanut butter frosting.  Bring your sweet tooth as eating freshly baked whoopie pies will be the best part of class!   Each participant will leave with a signed copy of Nancy’s cookbook so they can recreate each whoopie recipe at home for friends and family.  $45 per person.  Planning to stay overnight?  Book our Cooking Class Getaway Package.
